Saxophone Colossus by Sonny Rollins Sonny Rollins is one of my favorites. His sound has had a massive impact on my tone concept. While his technical prowess is hard to ignore, he always plays so soulfully. I can easily get so lost in the emotion of his playing that I hardly notice how intelligent his lines are or how explosive his playing is until I snap out of the trance I've slipped into. And then there is Max Roach. This is what it sounds like when a drummer absolutely gets his band leader. This is right there with the way Elvin Jones gets Coltrane, or Mitch Mitchell gets Jimi Hendrix. This version of You Don't Know What Love Is might be my favorite take on a jazz ballad. For those of you who aren't so into jazz, instead check out Sonny Rollins' great playing on the Rolling Stones' Waiting on a Friend.
