Wilco - Sky Blue Sky
I've been a fan of Wilco for most of their 25 year history. That had recorded 7 very good albums (including volume 1 and 2 of Mermaid Avenue)before Sky Blue Sky, despite several lineup changes. Jeff Tweedy is a very good songwriter, and many incredible musicians contributed to the earlier records, but it was really with this album and the lineup that has remained unchanged for 12 years since that Wilco really found its identity as a band. No previous version of Wilco is anywhere near as good as a band. Nels Cline is one of my favorite guitarists, and very much influenced by last week's recommended album Marquee Moon. Check out his fantastic guitar solos on Impossible Germany and Side with the Seeds. They record everything live in their amazing loft in Chicago, pictured in the insert. And they pull everything of flawlessly in concert. One of the best bands of the current century. If you don't know them yet, you should check them out. If you do know them, them you know every word I say here is true.
