What Are You Listening to This Week? (archive - 6/9/19)

Updated: Feb 28, 2020

Derek and the Dominoes - Layla and other assorted love songs George Harrison's All Things Must Pass was one of the first albums I ever bought and has always been one of my favorites. Those recording sessions gave birth to this band, essentially the backing band for much of Harrison's masterpiece. Trade one slide guitar master (Harrison) for another (Duane Allman), and you have this band. Clapton's playing and singing is incredible and personal. And Duane puts on a slide blues clinic with his playing on songs like Tell the Truth, Key to the Highway and many others. I especially love how Duane uses the slide to sound like a harmonica. You could almost believe it's Little Walter. There is an art to backing up a singer and adding your own stamp to a song without ever getting in the way of the vocals. Duane's playing on Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out is a perfect example of this. If you aren't already familiar with this record, check it out. I hope this record can inspire you as it has me
